Once again a city got attacked by ransomware ! The mayor of Atlanta , Georgia has confirmed today in a press conference that several local government systems are down due to a ransomware attack. Hackers have shut down key computer systems in the US city of Atlanta, Georgia and are demanding $51,000 in Bitcoin to reenable the affected systems.

The attack was first discovered at 5 a.m. on March 22. The City of Atlanta noted that the ransomware were affecting systems that customers use to pay bills and access court-related information.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms expects city departments to open tomorrow, but operate without IT support.

Asked if the city plans to pay the ransom note, Mayor Bottoms said “We can’t speak to that right now. We will be looking for guidance from specifically our federal partners.”

Not all IT infrastructure were affected because the city was in the process of moving some systems to cloud services, and those were not affected.

Bitcoin is currently trading at around $8,500 which means that demanded ransom would cost the city approximately 6 bitcoins. Asking cryptocurrency as ransom is not a new practice. last year too we saw how wanna cry ransomware affected the entire world and how hackers demanded bitcoin worth $300 to unlock the systems.

As cryptocurrency provides a good amount of anonymity and its cross border so hackers often use it to ransom users across the world
